On June 1, 2022, there will no longer be tariffs on American Whiskey and Bourbon entering the United Kingdom.

The tariff on whiskey (25%) in the UK was put in place in response to Trump’s 2018 tariffs on aluminum (15%) and steel (25%) imports. The president cited “national security” and preservation of the U.S. manufacturing base.

The European Union had also applied this tariff on American whiskey, but already suspended it in October 2021. The United Kingdom will not do so until next June.

During the years the tariff has been in place, American whiskey exports to the EU plummeted 37% according to the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS), from $702 million to $440 million. In the UK they fell by 42%.

US distilleries are celebrating the end of this “tariff nightmare” and toasting to the restoration of free trade with two of their most important allies and trading partners, the EU and the UK. At Bulk, Wine and Spirits we always keep you informed about changes in the spirits’ market. We are already working with several EU customers who are ready to resume their bulk Bourbon trading operations since last October.
